Worth a trip for the trail alone

Three ranges every trekker has a list for.

Plenty of places make a good week of walking. The Nepal Himalaya, the Peruvian Andes and Patagonia are the ones hikers cross continents for: the highest passes, the biggest peaks, the routes you plan a whole year around.

Nepal

The Nepal Himalaya

Nowhere else puts this many giant peaks within walking distance of a trail. From Kathmandu the classic routes climb for days through Sherpa villages and rhododendron forest to the foot of Everest, or loop the Annapurnas over the Thorong La. You sleep in teahouses, eat dal bhat by lamplight and wake to walls of ice. No mountain range on earth rewards a long walk more.

Peru

The Peruvian Andes

Above Cusco the trails run high and old. The Salkantay crosses a 4,600m pass under a glacier on the way to Machu Picchu, the Ausangate circles turquoise lakes and rainbow-striped ridges, and the Inca Trail walks stone laid five centuries ago. Thin air, big passes and ruins at the end of the day. This is high-altitude trekking at its most storied.

Argentina & Chile

Patagonia

At the bottom of the Americas the wind never stops and the granite never quits. Day walks under Fitz Roy out of El Chalten, the W and the O circuits through Torres del Paine, the ice cap and the calving glaciers near El Calafate. Raw, exposed and unforgettable, Patagonia is the trek serious hikers save for last.

If you only do one

The trek more hikers rave about than any other.

Out of every route on the site, this is the one that sends people home telling everyone they know to lace up and go.

Nepal

A fortnight in the thin air.

The classic Nepal treks are long ones. The trail to Everest Base Camp climbs for two weeks through Namche, past spinning prayer wheels and suspension bridges, to a sea of ice below the highest mountain on earth. The Annapurna Circuit loops a whole massif over the Thorong La. You walk all day, sleep in teahouses and let an outfit handle the permits, porters and acclimatisation.

Peru

Walk old stone to Machu Picchu.

Above Cusco the trails run high and old. The Salkantay crosses a 4,600m pass under a hanging glacier on its way to Machu Picchu; the classic Inca Trail follows stone laid five centuries ago through cloud forest and ruins; the Ausangate loops turquoise lakes below a rainbow-striped ridge. Lodges or tents, porters, and a guide who knows the altitude.

Patagonia

Where the granite never quits and the wind never stops.

At the bottom of the Americas the mountains turn raw. Day walks under the spires of Fitz Roy out of El Chalten, the W and the full O circuit through Torres del Paine, the calving glaciers and the southern ice cap near El Calafate. Exposed, weather-beaten and unforgettable, this is the trek serious hikers save for last.

The High Atlas

Up Toubkal, North Africa's roof.

A few hours from the souks of Marrakech, the High Atlas climbs into another world. From the Berber village of Imlil it is a two-day walk to the 4,167m summit of Toubkal, with mule-supported camps, refuge huts and ridge routes spreading out across the range. The desert dunes of Merzouga and the Sahara camel treks are the other half of trekking Morocco.

Chiang Mai

Jungle trails and a 2,565m roof.

Northern Thailand is where a lot of trekkers take their first multi-day walk. The hills around Chiang Mai climb through bamboo forest and hill-tribe villages to Doi Inthanon, the highest point in the country, with overnight homestays, waterfalls and elephant sanctuaries strung along the way. Warm, green and gentle on the lungs, it is trekking without the altitude.
